The day for travellers based in Adelaide with one day to give the Clare Valley. You are collected from your hotel in the city or Glenelg and driven north to Auburn for a stroll. Then come tastings at Taylors, O'Leary Walker, Hill River and Pikes, with lunch at Antidote kitchen in between. The tastings and lunch are in the fare, and you are back at your hotel in the evening.
Collected from your hotel in the city or in Glenelg, and dropped back there.
The village at the valley's southern end, with its stone streets and antique shops.
A walk through the vineyard and the winemaking sheds before you taste.
A restaurant lunch in the middle of the day, in the fare.
The last tasting is at a family winery known for its Riesling.
Every tasting at the chosen venues is in the fare, so you carry money for bottles only.
The Clare Valley is 90 minutes to two hours north of Adelaide by road, which makes it a long day from the city. This one is built for exactly that. Your guide drives, so nobody in your group has to stay off the wine, and the route is set so you spend the valley hours at cellar doors rather than looking for them. From $341 per person you get the transport, a live guide, the tastings and lunch.
You start at the southern end, in Auburn, with a stroll through the old village. From there the day works north through the valley: Taylors, O'Leary Walker, lunch at Antidote kitchen, Hill River Clare Estate and, to finish, Pikes. Each stop runs about 45 minutes, long enough for a proper tasting without the day dragging.
The stops cover the range of the valley. Taylors opens its vineyard and winemaking facilities before you taste. O'Leary Walker is a cellar door for tasting and photos. Hill River Clare Estate adds a guided look round, and Pikes is a family winery known for Riesling, the grape the Clare Valley is famous for. The Clare Valley wineries page tells you more about each.
The trade-off is time on the road. About three hours and 45 minutes of the eight are spent at the stops, and the rest is the drive there and back. If you would rather spend more of the day in the valley, stay a night in Clare and take a valley pickup instead. The Clare Valley guided tours are compared side by side, from Adelaide days to local ones.
You are staying in Adelaide or Glenelg, you have one free day, and you want the Clare Valley's Riesling without anyone having to drive. It suits couples, friends and first-time visitors who like a set route with the tastings and lunch paid.
You want more hours at cellar doors than on the road: stay in the valley and take the scenic wine tour with local stories. If you want the outback as well, the 3-day Flinders Ranges and Clare Valley tour leaves Adelaide too. The day is not suitable for wheelchair users.
Choose your pickup point when you book. The list runs to 19 points in the Adelaide city centre, among them Stamford Plaza Adelaide, Hilton Adelaide, the InterContinental, the Mayfair Hotel and the Adelaide Riviera Hotel. Hotels in Glenelg are covered too. You are dropped back at the same list at the end of the day.
Your confirmation shows your time and point, so keep it on your phone. Every place the tours start is on the Clare Valley map, and getting to the Clare Valley covers the drive if you would rather stay up there.
