A Clare Valley day with the guide who lives here

Most wine days in South Australia start with a coach out of Adelaide. This one starts at your front door in the valley. Charles, your guide, lives locally and runs the day from the valley itself, so the hours you pay for are spent among the vines. From $174 per person you get the car, the guide, the scheduled tastings and lunch.

The day is not built around a stopwatch. When a tasting is going well, you stay a little longer. Between cellar doors you take the quiet back roads, and your guide fills them with the story of the place: the villages, the old stone buildings and the families who make the wine. Why a local guide changes the tasting

A guide who knows the winemakers can take you past the obvious stops. You taste at small family cellar doors as well as at names you may know from a wine list. How the six hours run

1. Pickup at your accommodation. In Leasingham, Watervale, Auburn, Clare, Burra, Penwortham or Mintaro; your start time shows when you book.
2. The first winery, about 90 minutes. A guided look round and a tasting.
3. A second winery, about an hour. Another tasting, with time to take in the view.
4. Lunch at a winery, about an hour. The charcuterie lunch, with a tasting alongside.
5. A sightseeing stop, about an hour. Out of the car and into the valley.
6. The last winery, about an hour. One more tasting before the drive back.
7. A final stop, then home. A last look at the valley, and drop-off in the town you started from.

There is no meeting point to find. Choose your town when you book: Leasingham, Watervale, Auburn, Clare, Burra, Penwortham or Mintaro. Your guide collects you from your accommodation there and drops you back at the end of the day. Starting times show on the booking calendar for each date.

Know before you go

• Stay in the valley the night before. Pickup is inside the valley only, so book a bed in one of the seven towns.
• Wear comfortable shoes. You walk from the car to each cellar door, and one traveller who sat out the last tasting walked back up to it the next day.
• Bring a card for bottles. Wine you buy and tips are yours; the tastings and lunch are already paid.
• Pace yourself. Four wineries in a day is a lot of pours, so sip, share a glass or skip one.
• Check your start time. It appears when you choose your date, and your guide arrives at your door.
